Theatre. Монолог на английском языке (Сочинение на свободную тему)

Theatre has been an important part of life throughout many different nations in different ways (as they say, every country has its customs), and even though it has quite lost its appeal in the present, its great influence is not to be wiped out. That’s why subject of theatre is worth of discussing.

First of all, one has to describe what the theatre looks like on the inside, its arrangement. The parts of the auditorium are the following. One can buy tickets in the stall, dress-circle, balcony or orchestra pit. It is believed that the best seats are in the front stalls, but personally I prefer buying those in the back rows so it is away from the orchestra pit where the musicians are sitting.

The backstage is the area visitor cannot see, it is divided from the stage by wings. There may be held certain off-stage activities such as rehearsals, but not the dress rehearses, which is the final one, of course. The dressing room is also located backstage. There are a bar, a cloakroom, and a lobby outside of the auditorium. The box-office is before the lobby, or the foyer. You can buy tickets in the box office, luckily you don’t have to line for them, as there are no queues today. There’s even an opportunity to buy the tickets from the ticket agency or to reserve them by phone. If you’re lucky enough, you can get complimentary tickets or house seats. In the worst case, one has to get by with standing tickets.

Theatre would not prosper without the people working in it. They are called a company. Excluding a director, a producer, a stage designer and members of technical crew, they are cast. A director stages a play, and a producer, or a manager, helps with the financial side of the production. One more very important person in producing a play is a playwright, or a dramatist. They are a writer, whose plays may become into a production even centuries after being written. There are unofficial names for some roles in the theatre, such as a star, a co-star, a principle boy, a leading lady, a thinking part and others.

Of course, there are various types of plays to one’s liking. The most obvious are tragedy and comedy and its combination, a tragic-comedy. What’s more, there are also farce, straight plays, historical plays, musicals and even thrillers!

Recently, I have been to a performance in the theatre. It’s Gorky’s repertory theatre. The performance was a first night, quite a unique production of the play called “Wolves and sheep” by Ostrovsky. I’d never read the play or seen any production of it before, so it was a totally fresh experience for me. I had booked the tickets for me and my mother in advance as none of my friends expressed the wish to enlighten themselves. On that day of the performance, we were not able to arrive in advance, but still managed to come before the 2nd call to our seats in the stalls, as the theatre etiquette requires. The auditorium was surprisingly crowded and it was full of seniors, but young people were also present in a great number. There were green and purple statues of wolves and sheep, and also a peacock, a bear and two cats on the stage. They probably represent different characters of the play. They were often used as props throughout the play: actors and actresses who were playing the servants would replace them, and the main characters would sit, dance and lean on them. Throughout the play, there was a certain magical scent; I do not know if it was sprayed on purpose, if it was just the smell of theatre or if it was someone’s perfume, but its sweetness made me enchanted. I wouldn’t say the play went well from the beginning as the first character that appeared was a drunk and the actor himself was not speaking clearly even when sober, so it was hard to understand his lines.

Rut I couldn’t take my eyes of the stage because I was immediately captivated by the atmosphere. I spent the entire act on the edge of my seat. The lightning would change according to the tension in the plot, shifting to purple when the wolves were leading and to green when sheep were doing it. My favorite actress was playing the landlady Murzavetsky, an old woman. I think she completely topped her part and I felt regret that I hadn’t brought a bouquet to present to her. Moreover, there was a married couple of actors in the play, but the husband, who was playing the drunkard, walked through his part, I think. I would say he would play to the gallery.

After visiting the theatre for the first time in a long while, I experienced great pleasure. I wish theatre would become popular in the future once again, as it is unspeakably fascinating. I would go to theatre more often if it was more affordable for me as a student. Luckily, our government offers such an allowance program, so our youth does not live in a cultural desert.
