There is no doubt that computer games are becoming more and more popular nowadays. While doing a project on why teenagers play computer games in Zetland, I found a table containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the table, the interviewed play computer games for different reasons. The most percentage of the respondents play computer games to entertain themselves (43%) as well as to distract from daily routine (27%).

Just under a fifth (15 %) play computer games to keep in touch with friends and another 11 % play to compete whereas developing good problem solving skills appear to be the least popular reason (4%).

Clearly, there is a considerable difference between the most and the least frequent reasons : the surveyed play computer games to entertain themselves more than 10 times as popular as to develop good problem solving skills. For comparison, difference between the figures for first two reasons in the poll is not so striking: it is about 15 %. It is not surprising, because usually grown-ups play computer games during their spare time to escape from the reality and to have a rest.

One problem that can be connected with playing computer games is that extensive and fixed staring at a videogame screen causes eyestrain. I believe that doing special exercises for eyes and keeping the amount of time spent on gaming under control would be the best solutions for this problem.

I think that computer games play an important role in teenagers' life because they teach young people to survive in various situations and help to explore world with minimum risks.
